"How to Strain your Dragon"

Films: Eragon (2006)

Alias: Saphira, Smoke Dragon, Shruiken

Type: Mystical

Location: Civilized Area/Forest

Height/Weight: Ranges from twice that of an elephant to incomprehensible.

Affiliation: Good (Saphira), Evil (the rest)

Summary: Take the fantasy of "Lord of the Rings", the characterization and scope of "Star Wars", and the awesomeness of dragons alone, put them all together...now suck out whatever originality or charm you might have once had, and voila! You have a derivative stillborn franchise!

History: Long ago, there were dragons and dragon riders everywhere. But then one day, a rider named Galbatorix let power go to his head, and proceeded to lead a massive campaign with all manner of evil riders, sorcerers, and not-Orc armies to slaughter all the other dragons and their riders. The good news is that later on, an elven princess rescued a sapphire dragon egg from the evil sorcerer (or Shade) known as Durza. The egg ended up in the farm of young Eragon Brommson, who kept it as his own. It hatched as the last dragon (seemingly). The dragon magically grew to adulthood not long after, naming herself Saphira, and declaring Eragon her rider. Now the two must work together to defeat Durza, and overthrow Galbatorix's reign.

Notable Kills: Nothing special.

Final Fate: During a huge battle, Saphira and Eragon manage to take out Durza and his large smoke dragon, but are almost killed themselves in the process. Thankfully, they recover, and set out to keep doing good. However, an outraged Galbatorix has something in store for our heroes. His own dragon, the dread beast Shruikan...or at least it would be that way if this franchise continued.

Powers/Abilities: Fire-breathing.

Weakness: Each other. Also, if the rider dies, so too does the dragon.

Scariness Factor: 3.5-Saphira is definitely a good guy, no questions asked. Sure, she can be a bit stubborn, but she's ultimately a wise and noble soul. The same can not be said for whatever the Hell Durza conjured up. That thing was pure, ugly evil. As for Shruikan, well at least he made a small impression...

Trivia: -This film was based on a series of books written by a person who wasn't even past her twenties when she started making them. They are...certainly open to interpretation, quality-wise.

-In the books, Saphira is a lot more reptilian than her film counterpart, and positively relishes in bloodshed at times. As for Shruikan, he is Galbatorix's current dragon, but he's the largest dragon of them all, and was apparently once a good dragon treated so badly by the dark lord that it drove him mad to the point where some speculate that if Galbatorix were out of the picture, he would destroy the world out of pure rage alone.
